Lyman House Museum at a Glance

Here’s a place where you can celebrate everything that’s beautiful about Hawaii. The Lyman House Museum in Hilo, Big Island is basically a collection of galleries showcasing Hawaiian culture, history, and natural wonders in an aptly historic mission house. The house was built in 1839 for missionaries David and Sarah Lyman, and today, almost a century later, is one of the most esteemed museums in the state.

The two main galleries are the Earth Heritage, which shows off Hawaii’s natural wonders, and Island Heritage, where you’ll find relics from all over the Big Island. Among the highlights in Earth Heritage are mineral and shell collections, a 10-foot tiger shark, and remains of the only two flightless birds native to Hawaii-the flightless goose and the Hawaiian rail. Island Heritage takes you back through time with samples of native clothing, fishing and hunting tools, and models of old Hawaiian huts.

Also a popular stop is the Shipman Gallery of Chinese Art, named after the family whose civic works were instrumental in the development of East Hawaii. The gallery houses the family’s private collection, which includes pieces dating back as far as 3,000 years.

The Lyman Museum is located along Haili Street in Hilo. It is open Mondays to Saturdays from 9:30am to 4:30pm, but the Archives section is accessible only by appointment. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $3 for children 6-17. Special rates are offered for family tours, university students, and Kamakua residents. Group tours, workshops, and special tours have to be booked in advance.
