Kapoloa Falls at a Glance

Here’s a site for adventure-loving hikers. The Kapoloa Falls is a well-hidden secret of the Big Island, nestled deep in the Pololu Valley on the North Kohala coast. With a drop approaching 500 feet, Kapoloa is a literal wall of water resounding with the sheer power of nature. One can hear the rumble of these falls from several meters away, and as you approach, the vibrations reach clear down to your feet.

Like many Big Island attractions, the road to Kapoloa is quite a challenge. This particular hike spans roughly ten miles and takes you through steep, rugged trails. But every step is well rewarded once you reach the 1,000-ft peak—and what a reward! Crystal clear waters, towering cliffs, and miles of lush vegetation make for a perfect after-hike photo op. In the mist, the waterfalls are breathtaking and look almost surreal.

The main lookout point is actually in the middle of the waterfall. From here, the water drops from 300 feet above you and continues 200 feet below, occasionally obscured by the trails. Occasionally during the hike, you are actually walking alongside the fall itself. It’s easy to get lost in the winding trails, so most visitors come with a tour guide.

Several hikes are offered throughout the year, with different programs for beginners and experienced hikers. A typical hike takes around three hours, but the trip itself (including the drive) can take up to 7. Most hikes do not allow children below 8 years old, so check with your guide if you’re bringing your family.
