Kapoho Tide Pools at a Glance
Imagine sitting in your own private pool, the sun over your
head and waves lapping around your feet. That pretty much
describes a dip in the famed Kapoho Tide Pools on eastern
Big Island. Tide pools are naturally protected from the
surf by large rocks, offering calm waters for swimming,
snorkeling, or simply lapping around. Kapoho boasts an unusually
large number of these pools, strewn 200 meters into the
water from the sandy coastline.
Besides their sheer number, the Kapoho Tide Pools are noted
for their naturally heated waters. The heating comes from
the volcanic activity in the nearby Kilauea, which keeps
the water deliciously warm throughout the year. The largest
and hottest of these pools is located in a free admission
park called Ahalanui. The water here can reach a sweltering
90 degrees!
Some of the pools also offer great snorkeling and diving.
The underwater scene is undeniably beautiful, although not
as remarkable as the Kahaluu and other Big Island beaches.
Check out the local marine wildlife such as green sea turtles,
coral reefs, and colorful reef fish. From the higher rims,
you can actually look out into the ocean and watch the other
tide pools.
Most of the tide pools near the fringe are now privately
owned, so stay away from the outer edges. The best time
to go is during the day, as the daylight will help you avoid
the sharp rocks that line the shore. Consider bringing beach
shoes or sandals if you’re planning a hike-you’ll be glad
for the extra protection!
