Unlike many big resorts, the Tara Firma Inn is a much more personal experience. Located in the small town of Volcano, this bed & breakfast was built in 1989 on the cool slopes of Mt. Kilauea and as such is a great escape from the stifling summer heat. The surrounding area of Volcano is home to a community of artists, scientists and farmers, a very different feel to the more touristy areas of the Big Island.
The Inn has just three bedrooms, so advance booking is recommended Perhaps the best option is the Orchid Suite, which has a queen-size bed and large private bathroom including a separate tub and shower. Of the other options, the Fern Room has its own private lanai, which overlooks the rainforest. This room shares a bathroom with the Ginger Room. All rooms come with cable television.
Guests are invited to join their hosts for breakfast between 7 am and 9 am. Free parking is available and a welcoming fireplace burns in the lobby (in colder months). The Inn is just a five-minute drive from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, so it is convenient for guests who would like to explore the park for multiple days.
