Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, Big Island

The Four Seasons Hualalai is a luxury resort with 243 guest rooms spread out across 37 one- and two-story bungalows arranged in crescent shapes looking out onto the beach. All units have ocean views. Rooms on the second floor have better ocean views, but the ground floor rooms have a nice garden with an outdoor lava shower.

What's unique about this resort is the large anchialine pond, with a mixture of freshwater and saltwater. Is is connected to the ocean underground, so it rises and falls with the tides. Around 40 species of fish live in here and the snorkeling is great fun. There are four other pools distributed on the resort grounds, plus a children's pool.

The resort is located on Ka'upulehu Beach. However, the swimming conditions are poor here because there is a lava bench on the nearshore ocean bottom. A beach with better swimming conditions is Kuki'o Beach to the south.

The list of amenities is as you might expect at an upscale resort with a few added extras, such as interactive television screens, coffee makers with free daily coffee, a free laundry room, soaking bath tubs and twice daily maid service.

The onsite cultural center runs activities for the entire family to enjoy. These include a wide variety of fun and games from ukulele and hula lessons to basic Hawaiian language classes. There is also a permanent exhibition of Hawaiian artwork in the cultural center.

Meeting or function space is also available for private parties, weddings or business meetings.
